Diarrhoea can be caused by a simple change of diet or by a more serious illness or infection. It can happen suddenly and last for a short time or continue for weeks, months, or come and go. Normally, a single episode should not be a matter of concern. However, should the diarrhoea persist for more than one day, it could cause dehydration and be the symptom of a deeper problem that requires the expertise of a vet. Here are a few causes of diarrhoea:
- changes of diet,
- food intolerance,
- ingestion of waste or deteriorated food,
- ingestion of toxic substances or plants,
- ingestion of foreign bodies (for example, toys, elastic bands, plastic bags, etc.),
- allergic reactions, bacterial, viral infection, internal parasites such as roundworms, coccidia, giardia inflammatory intestinal diseases, liver or kidney diseases, cancers or other tumours to the gastrointestinal system, certain medicines, colitis, stress, haemorrhagic gastroenteritis.
